Screenplay and acting?

Does attending college as a theatre major count as acting training? Please help!?

  • Will it look good on my acting resume? Can I even put it on my acting resume under training? Please give me specific answers pertaining to my question and situation not just general speeches. Here's my situation: I am 21, live in NYC and I'm serious about becoming a professional actress. However, everywhere I turn feels like disappointment. I am currently attending college as a theatre major and I feel like I'm not getting the right training or being met half way by my acting professors at my college. My college is known to be the "best" and only performance-based theatre major at a community college in New York, but I don't feel like I'm learning much. What should I do? Should I continue my education as a theatre major in college or try to get into a professional acting school/conservatory like American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Julliard, Stellar Adler, NYU Tisch etc. I know. Also I know some of the schools I mentioned are either conservatory style training like Stellar Adler or an actual school like NYU where you earn a degree. Thing is I know EXACTLY want I want to do as an actress. I want to do as much as possible and take on as many different roles as possible. I I want to be in commercials, broadway/ theatre, do independent films, be in high budget productions, voice overs for anime and pixtar, movies, and write a screenplay. Even if I don't get into all of them I want to at least get into one like commercials. I'm ambitious and love acting. It's fun and ever since I've been studying acting I've been finding myself and learning more about who I am and wouldn't want to exchange that for the world.

reposting the exact same question, will not change the facts. a 4 year degree in theater will only give you the ability to possibly teach theater, and student debt. casting agents don't give a sh*t if you graduated from a 4 year college with stage training. they want a certain look, talent, and skill...and even then, the producer or director may hire someone they are sleeping with. if your school isn't giving you ample performance opportunities, you are better off spending your money on smaller classes that will actually teach you things you need to be a successful actress.there are also MANY theater groups in NY. find some auditions and go try. if, though, you are as redundant and annoying in real life, as you are on here, not many professionals will want to work with you. but what do I know? i've only worked in theater since the late 80's, and film for the last ten years doing makeup, hair, art dept, casting, locations, and other assorted producer jobs. i manage my son's acting career, and he has an amazing resume, reel, and agent and at 11 years old, is a six year veteran who has made a pretty sick amount of money. if you don't want to hear the truth, quit asking.

Yes, I do think it would look good on your resume. I dont know if you can put it as training. If you are not learning much at your current college then going to a professional acting school would be better at learning it. But, getting a degree is important as well. I would get a degree first and then go to acting school so that you have something to fall back on. I know you don't want to hear that but it shouldn't be discouraging. Get a degree and then go into acting completely. Thats just what I think. You can do whatever you feel is best. I hope you make it into the industry and are successful. :)

I am in a situation close to yours. I am 22 and a musical theatre major. Yes any classes are considered training. As for the school thing just do what you feel is right. I actually was going to the only community college around me with a musical theatre program then a few years ago while I was still trying to complete my degree they got rid of the program. I would suggest finishing your generals and get a general Associates of Arts then transfer to a University. That is what I am doing. I just graduated with my AA and am now looking into Universities.
