What is Prom exactly?

What is the meaning of prom? I really don't understand. I don't know what to do, go with a friend or concert?

• Hello everyone, I really don't understand the meaning of prom. Is it meant to be an event you take a person you find attractive/someone you would date. Or is it meant to be a "fun time with friends". I really am not enjoying it. I got rejected by 2 girls I liked and would date. 1 whom I really like and she used to like me but now she doesn't and I really don't know what to do. Anyways, this friend I don't really like more than a friend wants me to go with her. Trust me guys nothing will happen. I am not physically attracted to her and her personality would get on my nerves. I mean my gut is telling me to go to prom even though I don't like her because some of my freinds (not close ones, they are a grade lower or too nerdy to go). But my mind is angry of being rejected by people I like and giving in to others. Also I really don't like this other girl and I would hate to spend a romantic evening with a matching suit and going on boat rides (prom Venue) with fancy meals at a country club with someone I don't like. I mean I wouldn't hate it, it might be fun, but it seems so pathetic giving in to someone who wants to do something that I don't. Then again if I reject her I am just doing what the other two girls did to me. Mind you I'm not really sure why they rejected me. I have cool hobbies, I am smart and I'm not sure if I'm attractive but I asked yahoo answers lol and they said I was and I don't think I'm ugly? Anyways there is a part of me that says I'm just kinda tired of doing things because people want me to. Like I don't want to go on a date with someone I don't like just because some people that are my "friends" (my close friends aren't going) will be there and my mom is friends with the girls mom. and that Part of me says screw prom, go to a skrillex concert with a friend (sorta friend) instead (same day). But part of me tells me prom will be fun. Guys what is the meaning of prom, what should I do? Concert or prom?
