Is Nursing a good career?

Would nursing be a good career choice for me?

  • well, what i first wanted to do out of high school was be an artist. so i went to art school only to run out of money (it was a veeery expensive school) and find that job prospects in my area are very slim. so ive been stressing for almost a year now looking for something else i would like to do with my life. ive been thinking about other things i am passionate about. i like helping people, im a very caring, kind person. people always refer to me as the "nice" girl. i would also love to have a job that matters, something i would be proud to say i was. i was thinking about nursing. maybe even something with babies or children because i love families and looove kids. but ive been seeing online that its a horrible career. that all u do is clean poop and vomit all day, nurses and doctors are terribly mean nd will do anything to throw u under the bus, suicide rates are really high for nurses, and all this stuff thats absolutely terrifying me. i mean i know its got its hard points, but...dont all jobs? like right now i wrk at a restaurant nd catering place nd i am constantly on my feet, never get a lunch, my supervisor is a complete brat who makes me run around like a crazy person trying to get everything done cause shes too lazy and constantly puts me down. they change my schedule around on me constantly. all of this for 8 bucks an hour. and even tho it sucks, i make the best of it, nd try not to let it get me down, and im fine. and i wonder if these nurses are just complaining and venting or if nursing is really a terrible choice. nurses have alot of opportunities dont they? i mean if i work at a hospital nd im miserable thers got to be somewhere else i can work tht fits me better right? i also hear that nursing is good for raising a family, and raising a family someday is very important to me. idk, i was excited because i thought i found something that i could actually do with my life and be proud to do, but, what all these nurses are saying on the internet makes me soooooo scared nd doubt the choice :(

  • Answer:

Not everyone is terribly mean and there is not a higher suicide rate among nurses-that info in simply not true. You might want to actually volunteer in a hospital or two, to get a first hand look at the career. Many people have a rose-tinted idea of nursing that does not hold up and that is partially what makes disgruntled nurses.

Pros: Good Pay, rewarding job when you know you took part in taking care of someone. Cons: Takes a lot of hard work and may have long hours. Must have a Bachelors and a RN based education program. If you have Art school debt, Nursing school can also cost. Not sure what you mean about suicide rates in nurses, etc. You have to be disciplined, little room for error and a open/people person.

Dear nursing career: Only you can answer that question. Do you like helping sick people? If so, nursing is a good way to do it. Sincerely, B.A.S.S.

You will never make it through nursing school is you do not understand the concept of paragraphs! No idea where you heard that nursing suicide is hig or that nurses and doctors are "mean". I am an ICU nurse and love it.
