How to connect to tv?

How to connect a Philips HTS5131 soundbar to Tv with no HDMI output?

  • I bought a Philips HTS5131 sound bar to connect to my 47inch Philips LCD TV (about 5 years old). The philips tech guy said this would connect by HDMI however the TV has two HDMI ins and no outs so I am guessing that will not give me sound from the tv through the sound bar. The sound bar plays dvds back to the TV fine. I wonder if I split the incoming HDMI cable from my sky box and sent one to the TV and one to the sound bar would that work and would the dvd in the sound bar then play without changing the cables back? The other option I am thinking is to run a optical link from my sky box to the sound bar & TV which is 20m away? I have ordered a good HDMI 20m cable for this link. I think if I add the sound bar hdmi to the second input of the TV it will not receive a sound signal back via that HDMI. Until the 20m cable shows the TV is using coax link to the sky and the only way to get sound to the sound bar is via the headphone out on the tv which has a low gain and I have to turn the sound bar right up to hear much. The sound bar /DVD plays fine back to the TV with Youtube etc via ethernet which is great if a little slow sometimes. Any ideas welcome

  • Answer:

There are no HDMI output on any tv in the market today. The tv only provide you with an optical audio output. You connect an optical audio cable from the tv to your sound bar to hear the sound from the tv. Hope this will help you out.
