How long can an aquatic turtle live without a UV light?

  • It's a red ear slider aquatic turtle. It still has a basking light, but the bulb for the uv light just went out. I know that without it, it can damage the turtle's bone and soften it's shell. How long can it go without a UV light. And also which store would have a lower price. Petco or petsmart.

    Take your turtle to bask in sunlight if it's nice out! Must be supervised at all times, though. They can survive this way, but it would be of great inconvenience to you and your turtle for prolong periods. People often forget the best UV source comes naturally and is actually what our turtles are designed/evolved to absorb the best.

I would get that light replaced ASAP. Just because it COULD live for quite a while without it, doesnt mean that it is good for him/her. How long COULD you live without food? As far as pricing, i would just check their online stores to compare. Good luck!

He isn't going to die instantly without it but it is best just to go out and get one as soon as you can. They need it for their bones, their shell, and for their digestion! So think about that. For the time being you can take him outside with you in a tupperwear container and a little water on sunny days to get the UV rays from the sun that way. Just make sure to watch over him from time to time to see that no bigger predators are messing with him and make sure he has some shade. I like to go to PetSmart more. I always found that they had better selection and were cheaper.
