Why doesn't Quebec want to be a part of Canada?
-
I've been wondering for like, the longest time why Quebec doesn't wanna be a part of Canada anymore. It would die without the rest of Canada! Any reasons why it wants to separate?

Answer:
It is entirely a cultural issue. Once upon a time, France got here first, and set up their colony along the St. Lawrence river. Then, Britain arrived, set up nearer to the Great Lakes, and warred with France for the rest. They won, but then there was already this colony full of angry French people on their land. So the British allowed them to stay French while the rest of the country's future expansion was English, and the cultural conflict between the two has never completely died. The separation issue isn't talked about very much these days. It is, politically at least, a dead issue. It very nearly happened twice: once in 1980, and again in 1995. The 1995 referendum failed by a margin of 0.59%. Since then, it has calmed down. Fewer Quebecois want to separate now, though some still do. Especially since the political party that served only to represent Quebec completely collapsed in the last election. They're all at least voting for parties that represent the whole country now. There are no economic benefits to Quebec, or to Canada as a whole, to be gained by Quebec separating. They likely would not be able to support themselves, and Canada would lose its second largest province (by population, and by economic contribution) which would be terrible.

Quebec's perfectly fine with being part of Canada. It's a minority of hardcore separatists that want to create their own nation. But Quebec voters, fed up with separatist nonsense, almost wiped the separatist Bloc Quebecois party out of existence in Canada's most recent Federal election. The root of it is very simple. Quebec was founded by France, while the rest of North America was founded by England. Therefore, Quebec is the only majority French-speaking place in the continent, so they feel they have a unique cultural identity that needs to be protected. As long as they are a part of Canada, they feel that identity is threatened by the overall majority English culture in the country. Secondly, throughout the first three quarters of the 20th century, French Quebeckers were treated as second-class citizens. Despite being the majority, all the business executives and government higher-ups were English, while the French had the highest school dropout rate in the western world and normally ended up with low-paying factory jobs. After what is now called the "quiet revolution," the French-speakers got equal rights and now feel that they need to protect that status by separating from English-speaking Canada.

Good question. Why don't you do a survey on the street in Quebec? See if people talk to you at all about this issue.
because quebec has developed its own language, culture, and identity, whereas the rest of canada is nothing more than a cultural satellite of the united states, they are barely even a people at all. even the parts of canada that previously did have at least some of its own culture (ie newfoundland, acadia) is just rapidly assimilating into the american cultural satellite that is canada. the less ties quebec has with canada, the better.

I don't think they actually want to leave. Sure they (some of them) talk and talk and talk about it all the time, but they never seem to actually do anything about it. It's not like anyone is forcing them to stay (the door's right there), and even when they hold a public vote on the matter they absolutely refuse to ask a straight question. I actually blame England for the Quebec-separatist problem. England kicked their butts and made them say uncle in that war (specifically the Plains of Abraham), but then they decided to let them keep their language and culture. I don't think the UK has made that mistake since.
