Have i done any permanent damage to my body through taking prednisolone (prednisone)?
-
Hi, i'm 29 and have had eczema of varying degrees almost throughout my life. Around 7 or 8 years ago i had a really bad flare up and was prescibed prednisolone (prednisone). I was prescribed 30mgs a day. I can't remember, but i think it may have been for a whole month. I seem to remember getting a repeat prescription for more when i ran out, until a locum doctor asked to see me about why i was asking for a repeat prescription for prenisolone. He told me that he wouldn't prescribe me any more and then explained to me what it was, how it works and all the side effects. I was shocked, as i thought up until then it was a wonder drug that cures eczema. I wasn't told about any of the horrifying side effects and was prescribed more without even seeing a doctor. I stopped taking it there and then until about 6 years later when a i had another unbarable flare up of eczema. This time i took 15mgs per day for 5 days. Then about 9 months later i did the same course when another really bad flare up occured, then again about 2 months later. Since then (March 2012) i haven't taken prednisolone. After looking around on the internet for information on prednisolone i am worried that i may have done permanent damage to my body. I have no symptoms of steroid damage such as moon face, weight gain, cataracts, glaucoma etc. My skin is still very bad though due to eczema. I know that some people are put on prednisolone for long periods and experience side effects, but i can't find any information on: How long it takes for these side effects to occur Whether any are permanent What is considered a high dose of prednisolone What is considered a long term does of prednisolone When i first took it, should i have been weaned off it? (I wasn't) Whether or not it is likely that i have damaged my body in any way through taking this medicine Thanks.

Although the side effects are pretty dire from Predinsone, it's really quite a miracle. People do take it for years though, but obviously you want to experiment with the smallest dose possible. I've seen people get the whole blown-up face (moon face) and everything and then recover completely. I think it's where people are just terribly chronically sick... and they take this stuff forever - and finally the side effects do them in. What you want to do is use Prednisone was carefully as you can.

Fortunately the body recovers quite quickly from modest courses of prednisolone as it it the only option in exacerbation's in a significant number of conditions. 30 to 40 mgs a day is not an uncommon dose. It is no longer considered necessary to wean off a course of no more than 2 weeks. It is unlikely that Three courses should have no long term ill effects.
