Finding the right major for what I love, suggestions? Please?!?
-
I have almost competed my AA in Human Services and I'm finding myself less than enthused about going into the social work field. But after all my time in college I have determined what classes I love the most and I'm wondering what career options are available in these areas, or if there is a simple source for narrowing down my options. The things I love are: Cultural History, namely Native American Sociology and Research Studies Social Problems Psychology; both developmental and general I know I could be a "Sociologist" but realstically what career options are there with that? If anyone has any insight I'd really appreciate it! Or any websites that are helpful in determining one's major/minor or career path.

Answer:
Career builder has free career tests available on this link: http://www.careerpath.com/ which may be helpful for you to narrow down some career fields. There are several different types of tests, which is nice. There is more to it than just "interests".......looks at personality as well. Once you narrow down the type of career or job(s), I highly recommend searching jobs to see the actual employment opportunities for the positions. And to also look at the job qualifications. Indeed is a good job search....http://www.indeed.com Typically the traditional professional "sociologist" jobs will be based in the field of research and "studying" about social problems, groups, society, culture, etc.......usually those jobs require a PhD, or at minimum a Masters degree. If you are looking at the University level, definitely a PhD would be required. If you are interested in teaching at the middle or high school level, then of course you would need to check into the teaching requirements for your state. Each school system is different. A lady at work said her sister has an undergraduate degree in History and was unable to find any teaching jobs, because all of the positions she could find wanted the individual to actual be the coach for sports. She just wanted to teach "history", but there was not a "full" time need of teaching just history classes. I think it is great to be looking at this early on in your education, as there are individuals who are even getting graduate degrees who have no clue what they are going to do with the degree and they can't find jobs upon graduation. It is good to do that research and ultimately figure out what degree will get us the job. I know I didn't want to have to go back to college, so it was very important to me to get it right the first time. I attended a community college first, and my college college career center had a free computerized career test that was very helpful for me in determining what major I needed to consider pursuing. So you may want to check to see if the career test is also available at your community college career center.
