How to get sound on Hypercam 2?

How do I get that post-grunge sound on my guitar?

  • I've been playing guitar for about 9 months. I write a ton of music, and I'm really inspired by Post-Grunge bands like Seether, Staind, Chevelle, etc. I really love the sound they have. I want to duplicate that deep, rough grungy sound on my guitar. I don't understand how they get so their sound so low though. What kind of tuning do these bands use, and more importantly, what chords are they using to get that sound? Any help would rock. Thanks.

  • Answer:

Most use standard tuning. Some use dropped D tuning. The Fender Mustang series of amp is a good modeling amp for finding that sound. Mustangs model a lot of the amps that were popular among the grunge and post grunge bands.

Disclaimer/Disclaimer II - standard tuning and 1/2 step down (drop-D) Karma and Effect - recorded using baritone guitars tuned up (which you shouldn't do because it's not good for the guitar) to mostly drop-D 1/2 step down with a few exceptions. ("Given" was written in drop-D 1 and 1/2 steps down... so BGCFAC#). On a side note, Seether used Marilyn Manson's guitars for the recording. Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces - written mostly in drop C. Holding Onto Strings Better Left To Fray - mostly in drop C. Buy Ernie Ball Cobalts to get a thicker sound, and use a heavier gauge. Technically, you'd need a Mesa head to get the exact sound, especially a triple rectifier, but you should be able to easily emulate a sound like it using a line-6 Spider amp or a POD. With the amp, if you know how to rewire things, you can remove the middle of the three prongs from the headphone jack, re-route it to a switch, and run a secondary amp out of it to get an emulated sound simultaneously, adding a little more of a high-end gain to the mix. Clean, use light reverb and slight tape echo. Guitars, go with any Schecter model that has a push-pull tap for single coil pickups. Mahogany wood, rosewood fretboards, and maple necks seem to have a similar intonation. As for chords, there really isn't any model. Most post-grunge bands just use variations of power chords. Look at the Foo Fighters. They have three guitarists to create a wall of guitars. Seether and Chevelle frequently play octave chords (that would be like a 5 on the A-string and a 7 on the G-string.) Hope that helps!
