i generally use audials tunebite to convert audio and video files. and converting mp4 to avi definitely works as well. it it not a freeware but you can try their demo version, i am not sure about the restrictions but you should be able to convert some files without problems. http://audials.com/en/s/converter_conversion/video/convert_mp4_to_avi.html -> this is a tutorial which shows you how to convert mp4 to avi videos, in case you wanna take a look at it
