How to get German citizenship?

If I get a German Citizenship, do I call myself German?

  • I'm planning on renouncing my American Citizenship and obtaining a German Citizenship after I meet the requirements to do so (like living over there for years). When I do, do I continue telling people that I'm American, or do I say I'm German. I was thinking that I'd just say I'm an American born German citizen. But what do I completely refer to myself as? An american or German? I know this won't help but I speak perfect German, I'll be going to college over there, marring a German guy, my kids will be German, and my life from then on will be 100% German. I still don't know what to call myself if someone asks.

  • Answer:

The rules for getting German citizenship are very strict. You can call yourself what ever your little heart desires. I am a citizen of..... Or I am born in.... Citizen of ....... The other is I am a citizen of.... born in... A third option in some cases is I have DUAL citizenship of.... and.... Pick which ever is ACCURATE for you. Your passport tells you your country of CITIZENSHIP your birth certificate says where you were born. THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE THE SAME COUNTRY.

If you were born in Germany you're German, being accepted as a German citizen is like being an honorary German, ill have to say no

Raul

you are an American with (potential, not yet) German citizenship, know where your loyalties lie

you cannot renounce until you are 18 plus and you already became a german ... ps.. will never happen

Once you have renounced your US citizenship and have naturalized as a German, you can call yourself a German for what it's worth. You couldn't refer to yourself as an American anymore, as you would not be an American anymore. False claim of US citizenship is a serous felony, by the way. Frankly, it's even questionable if you would be allowed to ever set foot on US soil again after having told Uncle Sam that he can shove his US citizenship where the light don't shine. Ask your parents to schedule a psychological evaluation. I feel you must have some screws loose up there. Maybe if you are diagnosed early, there's still hope to fix you up. By the way, you won't be moving to Germany without having become the lawfully wedded wife of a Kraut, just for starters.
