How to make a homemade t-shirt?

ok...so its my mom's b-day soon and i wanted to make her a t-shirt i've seen people with shirts that they customized and printed it then ironed it on their shirt i want to know if you need to print a picture with a jet ink printer!!!???!!! i also want to know if the shirt need to be all cotton and so on. Please HELP! Thanks!
Answer:

you need to get some photo transfer paper and then get an image that is the same mirrored as it is being looke d on straight as the process transfers it to mirror image so any writing will be back to front - if you have picture editing software get it flipped horizontally put it though the printer and cut it out then place on the tee shirt and iron solidly for about four minutes or until the marks on the back o f the paper turn a different colour when cool peel off teh backing strip do it gently so that if it isn't ready you can replace and iron a bit more .
