How do I make a good graphic design portfolio for my future graphic design career?
-
Yeah I just want to know what sort of work I should include in my portfolio. I am studying at a Tafe and producing some of my best work. I also would like to know how to set my portfolio out (what paper size) and in the sort of folder I should present it in. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
For a graphic design portfolio it is important to put in the works of art that you are the most proud of. if you doubt any work, take it out. If you are in an interview you don't want to have to justify any of your work, you should be completely confident in the works that you put in and be able to defend and discuss all of the pieces. You should have about 8-15 works in a portfolio, not any more than that. Put your best piece at the front and your second best piece in the back. if you are making a book you should have a description of each work in your portfolio and have it talk about how the design is successful for the client and audience it was made for. It is also good to put a resume in your book. Sizes and presentation of portfolios are debatable. My portfolio is a 6" x 7" booklet and I recently went to a portfolio review where a couple of the reviewers told me that my book was the perfect size while others told me it was too small. So the size is really up to your own judgment. You should also try and find portfolio reviews in your area and write down all of their feedback. Good luck!

Layout your works creatively and don’t forget to add descriptions for the designs that you’re including. Look at some design books so you’ll get ideas on what kind of layout you should go with, or better yet, imagine that you’re actually making your very own design book. Keep in mind the basic design rules like white spaces, eye flow and apply them. Print your work in an A4 size paper since its universal and present it in a clear book folder. It’s also advisable to include a cd containing a soft copy of your works but don’t just settle in presenting it as stills. Make a flip book out of it with some flash based application (I think something like that is downloadable somewhere but I forgot what its called) or make some sort of animation presentation out of it. Just let your creative juices flow.
