Is it possible to reset router without messing it up?

• Hi, I need to open up a port so my friends and I can play on a server I'm setting up. I went to my router page and tried typing in the password. It didn't work. I asked my dad if he knew the password and he said he doesn't remember changing it. Is it possible to reset router without messing it up? I'd ask my dad if he could reset it but he would think I'm crazy for wanting to reset the router JUST for opening a single port for a server.

  It depends. There are three resets to a router. 5 seconds will do a deep power off. 15 Will reset the router back to factory settings. 30 seconds will wipe the firmware off the router. Now if you've got any settings that aren't factory set you'll lose them and it sounds like you have if you've not got the default firmware on there. If you're using say WEP rather than WPA then you'll need to set up any device wire;essly connected to it.
