How to upload a video on the Internet?

For hosting video via an IP Webcam, is the amount of simultaneous viewers dependent on internet upload speed?

  • I'm trying to host a video stream with my IP Wireless Camera. I've looked into hosting on a server with a professional company and it seems a little expensive for what I need to use it for. If I just invest in speedy internet (with plenty of upload bandwidth), will this be enough for hundreds of people to view at once? If so, what is the minimum upload bandwidth I would need? If not, do you have any suggestions? Helpful advice is much appreciated.

  • Answer:

I have never seen any upload speed on residential networks that could handle 100s of stream connections! You need about 150kbs min per connection. I doubt your camera by itself could even handle the load. Most can only connect 10 or so before running out of computing power. Use a streaming service or spend 3-4k / month for a fiber or dc3 / oc3 line.

The better you have the upload/download speed the better it is. However the streaming does not particularly depend upon you, also to the viewer. If you want to stream live videos, like of a cricket game which is going to be watched by 10000 people, you need to separate at least 50 KBPS speed and in its same ratio.

Most common implementation is to get some type of proxy/streaming service that redistributes your original feed.

Excessive MHz
