What is metadata?

What is the best way to back-up itunes library so it can be transferred with metadata on a Mac?

  • I need to back-up my itunes library so that i can format/wipe my hard drive and reinstall it with the same play counts, ratings, playlists ect. (metadata) but everything I have come across has been typically for PC to Mac but I need a Mac to Mac way of doing it where I can back up to an external drive. Thanks for reading and answering!

  • Answer:

Your iTunes Libraries are saved in your home directory\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music directory. mp3 files goes inside the Music subdirectory; mp4 files into the Movies subdirectory. If you back up your home directory as part of the Mac backup(default) using Time Machine, you would have what you want. If you do a fresh reinstall of OS X from your OS X Install dvd, you can then copy the contents of your backed up "iTunes Music" subdirectory into your new install.
