Does lack of sleep cause low blood pressure?

Can a lack of sleep cause high blood pressure?

  • I have been missing out on my sleep for a few days and have been really jittery. Today I went to walmart and as I was walking around i felt really really light headed and like i was gonna pass out. I then went to check my blood pressure and it was first like 132 over 87 then i checked it again and it was 140 over 92. I am 24 and dont have any health problems, but really feel like crap right now.

Those freebie machines at Walmart aren't worth the effort - they show a higher than normal reading - probably to scare people into spending money to see a doctor needlessly. A lack of sleep will not cause high blood pressure. But you should try and get at least 8 hours of sleep per night. The body uses this time to make repairs and perform the daily maintenance on the body. It picks this time - when you're laying down - so it doesn't have to compete with gravity. Slick, huh? Going without sleep like like you've been doing doesn't give the body the chance to fix things, and this may lead to problems down the road.
