Im an aspiring fashion designer but! Do you really need to complete a whole course?
-
I have an extreme passion for fashion, i am an aspiring fashion designer and ever since i was atleast 3 clothes and shoes and bags and accessories have been my bestfriend, i have an amazing taste in style, ive been researching trends, history and everything on fashion for over 6 years, i have really good knowledge about fashion, i have connections within the fashion industry, i wont go on and on but i did a part time course at a fashion institution while i was at school, im studying full time now. Im having a really big problem though, my fashion course is really behind, they are unorganised, the communication is disgraceful and the teaching methods are terrible, you might get a good teacher here and there but other than that my course is very dissapointing, i promised myself to complete the 2 year part time course and i did and im studying full time now and im really dissapointed in the course, i thought the part time was bad but this is worse, nothing is explained to you, no faith is put into you and they arent very encouraging..at all. Im starting to have major doubts about this course! We are expected to know everything, all the machines and ive heard of the machines but ive never used them and when it comes to using them nothing is explained, its really just a jump on the machine and finish it in an hour, i know things need to be finished quickly but to finish something smoothly we have to know wat were doing but like i said nothing is explained and if it is its not explained properly. I want to do my own label, my own collection and one day open my own shop or a really nice boutique. Do i really need a degree in fashion? Most designers dont even have one! Any advice on wat i should do? Should i continue to see how it goes? Should i go to my cousin whos a fashion designer for help on starting up? Please help guys, any advice?

Answer:
Yes you have to have a degree or you will never be taken seriously... in order to make the clothes you must know how to sew them first!! talk to your teachers about the issues you are having and if necessary go higher up than them until someone takes your concerns seriously. you are paying for shool i'm assuming and to not get the education you are paying for is a rip-off. you need to talk to school.
