Should I go to college then university or straight to university?

Should I go to community college straight out of high school or Private University For BSN for nursing?

  • Community college will be way cheaper but I feel like its gonna be a waste of time, two years for GE then transfer to a nursing school, another 4 years to finish nursing. Thats 6 to 7 years! I found a private university, West coast university In North Hollywood that will finish my BSU in nursing in 3 years, No wait or lottery to get it, and it is accredited so I can be a RN, then im going to study to be a nurse practitioner or CRNA. What Should I do?

I think you're confused. You can get an Associates Degree in Nursing from a community college. You don't have to take two years of generals and then transfer to start a nursing program. ADN programs require you complete a few prerequisite courses in biology, chemistry, anatomy & physiology, maybe a couple more, but then you start the nursing program and complete it in two years. So it's about 3 years in all. Then later you could find an RN to BSN completion program, and many of these programs are offered online or on weekends to make it flexible for working RNs. Or, yes, you can go straight to a full university and go for the BSN - but don't choose some expensive private college! Go to a regular public / state college / university. You'll get the same quality education because these nursing programs have to be accredited to meet the same standards. It will be cheaper. And it will be 4 years from start to finish assuming you attend full time and get into the nursing major the first time you apply. Don't spend extra money for promises of getting done sooner.Even if you had to wait a year or two to get into a different program, a couple of extra years in the long run of your lifespan is NOT a big deal.

I would be careful with the private university. You're certain they have all the standard accreditations? Will you be able to sit for boards in all states? Can you afford to pay back the school loans and probable private loans you will have to take? Can you afford to live there and pay your bills?

You have another option instead of a 2 year community college or an expensive private school..... Attend a state university like most of the nursing students going straight into a BSN program!

Before you get a student loan, I encourage you to watch the PBS Frontline eplisode "College, Inc." http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/collegeinc/ Most students attending for-profit colleges end up with students loan debt totaling in the tens of thousands of dollars. They also end up with a worthless degree and are unable to find a worthwhile job to pay back their loans. Student loan debt cannot be erased through bankruptcy...it sticks with you to the grave and beyond. Instead of racking up huge loan debt, consider attending a non-profit public university or community college and save thousands.

If you're going straight for your BSN, the cheapest and quickest alternative is to check out the school you want to attend for your RN. Find out the specific courses they require and only take those classes at the community college. Honestly, it should take you maybe 18 months to get through those. Then, when you get to your college, you'll be taking classes for nursing only. Not all colleges require the same coursework, so do your homework. An alternative is to get your RN through the community college (it's a 2-3 year ADN program), then find a RN-to-BSN bridge program. These can sometimes be found online. Best of luck to you!

u will be sorry to tune of 10000$ or more going with 'private' school. may b 'accredited' but how many actually get work - talk to those. as for CC it is for BS courses required in all 4yr degrees no matter which degree u go to. will save u 10000$ easy. check your info cause nursing schools are 4 yr but 1st 2 is community college junk. do ur home work b4 u get decades of debt.
