How do i know if i have HD radio?

HD Radio Questions? How does it work function.?

  • I was wondering are there HD only stations, does it play regular fm/am stations with better quality and is there anything special I have to do to hear the HD stations (i.e. How do I find HD stations and how do I know they are HD)? Im asking because I was thinking about buying an HD compatible radio.

  • Answer:

HD radio, at least on MW (AM), is an abomination. It causes all sorts of interference and other problems with analog broadcasts. Given a few minutes in control, I'd eliminate it forever. On FM, HD isn't quite so much trouble, but I still don't like the idea. Usually, you get the same programming on HD that the analog signal carries. Subchannels are possible, though, and can, if used, provide other programming. The main program is normally announced as being "HD1". The sound quality is better; on AM, it's supposed to be as good as analog FM, and on FM, it's supposed to be as good as a CD. Stations that offer HD have a tendency to let you know it by announcing it during station IDs. Otherwise, you should be able to find lists of HD stations online. Do us all a great favour by not buying into HD radio. If you simply must have better sound quality or different programming, use satellite radio (XM or Sirius). I'm no fan of satellite radio, but at least it doesn't screw up reception of the analog signals I want to hear.
