Will I be denied unemployment benefits if I do this?
-
I signed a one year contract from my current employer last August (2011). My contract ends this coming August and until then I am on my summer break starting today. The problem is that I do not want to come back to this job but I'm afraid if I turn down the offer of coming back (it is rumored she wants me back) then I will be denied unemployment benefits. Could I just tell my boss that I am planning on moving in with a friend that lives out of town and it would be too far of a drive? Or should I just ignore the phone calls? This job has been very stressful on me but it seems I have shown how good and reliable of an employee I am, but I'm looking to move on and find something else after my summer break is over... I'm still getting paid until August and I'm planning on taking EMT classes this summer that will last until October. I need unemployment benefits until I can find something worthwhile and way less stressful. What should I do?!

Answer:
This employer offered you employment and you refused. You will not collect unemployment benefits. These benefits are not for your leisure or to screw over employers who are willing to give you a job. You are a slacker who just wants to abuse the system and a good employer who wants to keep you employed. Hopefully the state can use your admission of fraud on Yahoo to give you some jail time.

You are not going to be able to draw unemployment benefits. If you don't take the calls or otherwise refuse to continue with this employer, it will be considered that you quit. The only way you will be able to draw unemployment is if they actually TELL you they don't have a position for you.

Yes you will be denied unemployment benefits if you turn down the offer of coming back. You will not be able to collect unemployment even if you do move. The point is you are the one who is voluntarily making the decision to stop working there and earning a paycheck. You will be unemployed by personal choice, and unemployment will not give you a dime. You should not turn down the offer of coming back if you need a paycheck for bills. You do not need to work there for the rest of your life, however the intelligent thing would be to continue working there until you are able to get another job offer. If you turn down the job you will be forced to live off your savings until you can get a new job. The economy sucks right now so finding another job will be an extreme challenge. People that leave a job to relocate are not eligible for unemployment. Ignoring phone calls is immature. The decision you make will influence your future, so you should think long and hard before turning down an offer to continue working there.
