Where to go white water rafting in Maine?

Can a morbidly obese person go white water rafting?

  • On July 20th, a friend of mine wants to go white water rafting for her birthday, and I would love to go, but fear I might be too big for it. I am a 20 year old female. I a, 5'3" and weigh 300lbs. I know that a lot of upper body strength is required (I am actually pretty strength, despite my lack of overall fitness), but I worry that I may not have the stamina or maneuverability needed. It is something I would love to do, at least once and the perfect opportunity has fallen into my lap. If I worked out and lost some weight (and possibly gained a little muscle), do you think I have the time to put myself into a better position to do this? Is it too dangerous for me at this state? She hasn't been rafting before, and she says it will be on an "intermediate" level course at Ohio Pyle, if that helps.

  • Answer:

Hello, generally the maximum desired weight is 250lbs, however some places don't have a maximum as long as you can fit into their wetsuits and safety gear. You also need to be able to be physically fit enough to swim a bit. If you are concerned, maybe call ahead to find out. I think its great that you want to give it a go and I don't think you should let anything stop you from doing what you want. If you need to lose a few pounds, it can be a great motivation to reach your goal. Good luck!
