What do I do if a birds nest looks like it's going to fall out of a tree?

• I have a tree in my front yard. It has a nest with a single egg in it. The last time i saw another bird in there was about two weeks ago. I was outside trying to take pictures of the bird in it's nest when it heard the snap of my camera and flew away. I haven't seen the bird since. Today I noticed an egg inside the nest which looks like it will fall out of the tree. We have had very windy weather lately. Should I try to situate the nest so it won't fall? Should I also be concerned that there is only one egg in the nest? I think it may have been too cold for that egg to survive. Should I leave it alone??? Please help..

  First, birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and the whole thing about your scent is a complete myth. You should leave this nest alone. It is not unusual for a hen to lay one egg and then go off to eat and gather strength to lay another and then leave and go off to gather strength to lay another. She will not begin to "sit" the nest until she is ready to start incubating the eggs when she is finished laying. They do this so that all of their eggs hatch at about the same time. Hens are VERY good at building and attaching nest. If you think that the nest is really going to fall, you could gently nudge it more securely into the place where it currently is... but dont move it. most likely the hen has everything under control though and you should leave it completely alone. If for some reason you feel that the birds are in danger after what you have just read, you should call your local wildlife rescue and let them handle it. Don't interfere on your own.
