I put a load of bleach into pond to kill mosquito larvae, why can i still see them wiggling around a day later?
-
I put so much bleach in that my pond is covered in bleach foam like its a foam party. i put it in last nite and left it. This morning i could see afew dead mozzies floating, but in the dark, where the pond lights are, i can see the little wiggling things still alive and kicking...they are easier to see at night because they go to the pond lights.... the water still has a layer of bleach foam, how are these things still alive drenched in bleach? also...when i made my pond, i did my homework, and i read these kind of things dont happen in moving water... i have a pump with a hose attached which runs back to ground and water comes out the other end, so water is being sucked in from the main body of the pool and transported to the other side, and i also have a seperate fountain, so plenty of movement, why am i still getting this crap?

Answer:
Household bleach will kill bacteria, but is not going to kill insects. Putting bleach into your pond killed the germs and turned it into a sterile swimming pool. You managed to kill off a whole lot of GOOD bacteria in the process that makes the ecology of a pond work in nature. The way to kill mosquitoes is to cut off their air. The larvae breathe through a tube that breaks the surface, so you need something like an oil that floats on top of the water. When the larvae surface, they can't break through the surface tension of the oil to breathe and they die. You need the type of oil that spreads on water instead of staying in a blob. The problem with most oils is that it is a pollutant. You might look for a biodegradable vegetable oil that will spread on the surface. It only has to be there for a few minutes to kill all the live larvae. And then, you reapply every few days over a couple of weeks to catch any new larvae that hatch. With your idea of moving water, it is true they do not breed in places like streams or rivers, but in your case, the water motion does not resemble a stream. The water flow is simply not fast enough to prevent them from breeding. All it takes is for the female to land ON the surface, so the water CAN be moving to some extent. If the water motion prevents the female from landing ON the surface, the female can't lay eggs.

There are tablets that you can use for this without killing every organism and fish in your pond. Bleach works okay in a 5-gallon bucket but not in a pond. Contact a pond supply dealer for some of the tablets. Good Luck!
