What is the difference between AT tires and Light Truck tires?

Finding the right tires?

  • I know this sounds like a simple answer: just look at the mfg specifications. But the stock tire size is not what the truck came with, and I want something way bigger, because a 205/70/14 is a small tire for a pickup truck to me. Currently, I have 215/70/14 on the front and 225/70 on the back, which I believe is the biggest 14" tire available.(it came with all 215's) I know the blazers of the same type(82-94) had 235/75/15, and sit nice and high. The thing is, is it the tire that made the suv sit higher than the s10 pickup or did they have different suspensions? That considered, is there a significant tire/ride height difference if I get 235/75/15's? I want something that will have that nice, big tire look, and make the truck sit higher up if possible. Also, The truck looks like a funny car, could that be because of the smaller front tire, even being just an 1" or so smaller in diameter? I'm also thinking if I can find a set of 225/75/14 cheaper than 15" rims and tires, that would also make a slight increase. Give me your ideas on that.

  • Answer:

215/70/14 and 225/70/14 the difference is .55" in dia so half of that is .225" in the stance of the truck front to back due to the tires. Finding a tire to fit the 14 inch rim will be hard. Going to a 15 inch rim will offer more results and 16 inch is even better. With a 15 inch rim using a 255/75r15 you will gain 4.21" in dia and will raise the truck 2.505" higher than it sits now. The wheels will fill in the wheel wells quite abit so just don't go crazy.
