When should I get my study guide for driver's permit?

Can I take Drivers Ed before permit?

I'm 16 years and 5 months old. I just signed up for I drive Smart and I don't have a permit. In Maryland, how do I obtain a Learners Permit? Do I have to attend a class? Or can I just study from a guide and take a test. and if i take drivers ed now, will it be pointless or will it still count when I want to get my license? I'm really confused on how the policy works. Please help! Thanks! [Please, only experienced people]

I'm experienced and I can tell you it will help if you crush your smart car. But out of all honesty you just get your license and you can drive with a permit at 15 1/2. The drivers test actually has some regulations against smart cars, cars with rear camera, and self parking cars.
