How can people tell other people's faces apart?

• Everyone has eyes, a nose, a mouth, etc. all aligned in the same general pattern. When you think about it, people's, for example mouths, do not look all that different. They are only really subtly different. And when you really look at people faces, the same is true for other parts of the face. If this is true, how can your brain clearly tell the difference between thousands of people's faces?

Human faces are dealt with in a particular sub-region that has evolved to make fine distinctions. Its ability to distinguish tiny differences between individual faces makes nearly all of us 'experts' at recognizing one another. Eg. Greebles are organic-looking objects used in studies that, like faces, are each lightly different form one another. At first sight the differences are easily overlooked, but as people become familiar with Greebles their brains start processing the sight of them in the face-recognition area. This allows them to see the tiny differences very clearly and they become Greeble 'experts'.
