Jobs in the social services field.

What are a few Human Services Jobs involving youth?

  • I'm graduating from high school this year and I'm highly considering a job where I can help others directly such as in Human Services. I'm even considering the Peace Corps after I get a bachelor's degree and more volunteer experience. My question is what type of jobs are available (besides social worker) in Human Services and is there another field I can consider majoring in besides Health or Education where I can directly help others, especially youth? I've tried to research a few sites but they only confuse me on what exactly Human Services is about.

If perhaps you are looking at working at a paraprofessional type position, like perhaps a residential aide who may work in a residential care setting for youth, many of of those job qualifications can be either high school or an associate degree. There are other positions like psychiatric aide/mental health technician as well in perhaps in inpatient behavioral hospitals that have units for children and youth. If your goal is to do professional work with the youth, then at minimum you should look at pursuing an undergraduate degree in either social work or psychology. If you want to actually do therapy services with them on a group or individual level, you would need either your Masters degree in Social Work (MSW) or perhaps your Masters in Psychology.......and licensure. During my undergraduate social work degree, the first semester I spent time observing at a free standing behavioral hospital that had wings for adolescents, children and adults. The individuals who were with the adolescents and children during the day were titled "mental health technicians". The technicians were with the youth/children throughout their day to day stay, they provided supervision and assistance. Whether escorting them to meals, leading activities, assisting them with their homework etc. Some technician jobs also may have them take vital signs, complete basic behavioral observations, etc. The technician positions at minimum required either a highchool diploma or GED. The other positions at this behavioral hospital were licensed clinical social workers (MSW required to be licensed as a LCSW), professional counselors (LPC) who had their Masters degree in Counseling or Psychology, and they had a psychiatrist and a psychologist on staff. Each role in the interdisciplinarian team is important, and each job has different job duties and responsibilities. Doing some online job searches in your area may be helpful in seeing what employers are asking for with qualifications..........some job searches you may want to look at are residential care homes for youth; behavioral hospitals that provide services for children and adolescents/youth; group homes for adolescents, etc. Indeed is one of the good online job searches http://www.indeed.com
