When do I start weaning kittens?

When can I start weaning kittens they seem big?

    Kittens need to stay with their mom at least until they are 8 weeks old - that is the very, very minimum age that they are reliably weaned. The earliest you can begin offering them food is four weeks - and that would be canned kitten food mixed into a 'soup' with liquid Kitten Milk Replacer formula. Some will start lapping it at 4 weeks, others not until 5 or 6. YOU do not wean the kittens, they will - along with mom - wean themselves.

At 2 weeks all they need is mamma and her food. Don't try to wean them, mamma will do it. I have made the mistake of taking kittens away from their mom too early when they were so big I didn't think they needed to nurse at about age 6 weeks. Well, they ate okay and their weights were good, but they had problems with trying to suckle objects for many months to come. When their teeth start coming in you can offer a little wet food, but they still need to nurse and don't force it.
