Replaced wire connectors to fuses on a GE mini fridge, but still not getting cold. What else could be wrong?
-
The fuses work as I was shocked by them when I accidentally touched them. The mini fridge was manufactured in 1992, model # TAW4SPE, and is a GE. It has a round black and apparently sealed canister on the back where the fuses plug in to and if I shake it something seems to move and rattle. Can't get it apart to see what is wrong as it appears to have been melted shut. If the fridge is laying on its belly and pluged in the black canister makes noise as if that is where the fan is, but when I stand it up it seems to stop making that noise and I can periodically hear the fridge click like a larger fridge does, but is still not getting cold. Thought that it was the wires to the fuses I cut back the wires and replaced the connecting plugs and the fuses are shocking me so I assume they are ok. The fridge does not seem to be getting cold so I don't know what else I should check or do. The coils are clean as is the rest of the back of the fridge, all wires are connected properly, the plug is in good condition, and I plugged it in to several different outlets. Any thoughts as to what could be wrong and how to go about fixing this would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:
To be honest, I don't think there's much life left in your fridge. I had a similar problem with a fridge and the relay had to be replaced. Since the fridge was manufactured in 1992 that makes it 20 years old which is far beyond the lifespan of most fridges today. You say something about the back being 'melted' shut...do you mean sealed or actually melted? If there is no way of getting into the fridge to service it, then you won't be able to fix it. I don't think these fridges were really designed to be serviced. I guess it's reached the end of it's life and you would have to replace it. Sorry..

That black metal cauldron thing that is welded together is the compressor...and its humming and clicking most likely becase the start relay is shot. Everytime it clicks its the overload protector tripping out from the compressor not starting. I think what you are describing as "fuses" might be this start relay. It is a small black or brown rectangular device that is plugged onto pins on the side of that compressor. Did you remove the black cover on the side of the compressor tank? There should be 2 or 3 wires under there, one going to a common pin (usually black), and either a white or red one going to 1 side of the start relay. This entire relay pulls off the compressor and can be replaced inexpensively. If you can take pics and submit them or email them to me, I can probably help you get it apart and get the relay off. Most appliance repair shops carry a univeraal one that will work, or you can order the online. I probably even have one that would work for you thatI could drop in the mail for a small fee. I've pulled several off of dead compressors and kept them as its a common part to fail.
