Can mild dehydration cause brain damage in the elderly?

Could Dehydration cause Brain Damage?

  • Today I had training in the conference room all day, I didn't drink any water all day until maybe 14.20. Before i drank i felt dizzy and got a headache and think it was because of me didnt hydrate... I still feel a little drowsy now several hours later and today it was pretty hot outside and i sat in the conference room all day. Do you think that i got any brain damage from not drinking for 5-6 hours...http://4mind4life.com/blog/2008/02/22/50-things-that-kill-brain-cells/ as you see number 9 and http://www.ehow.com/about_5134897_signs-symptoms-brain-dehydration.html Iam getting a little bit scared here. It says it can give you permanent Brain Damage

  • Answer:

Lots of things can give you permanent brain damage. The tricky part is distinguishing how much damage. Everybody loses a few brain cells now and then, but if you get a stroke, it's a different story. What you're describing doesn't seem worse than going to sleep after drinking alcohol without rehydrating. The headache part of a hangover, is caused by your brain shrinking from dehydration. It is preventable by drinking several glasses of water after drinking and before sleep. The point is, if people can survive that once (or more often) a week, and still make it through college, you're probably going to be fine.
