Can i change a regular phone into a smartphone? if i can how?

I can't surf the internet at home in my smartphone thru wifi .I automatically gets off very soon .?

• I have a wireless router for wireless internet service within my house . I also like to use my smartphone , HTC ONE X with Android 4.0 , at home to surf the internet through wifi which saves my money in mobile internet data. Since the wifi is by deault in off mode , I have to manually put it on by going to settings , wifi and then click the on button .But after some minutes of using internet again the connectioni is lost since the wifi is off automatically. Whenever I try to surf the internet at home through wifi I have to repeat this process several times a day. I also had my recenlty bought wireless router replaced but still having the same problem . If I go to my friend's place I can use my smartphone to connect to his network at home thru wifi automatically and the speed is so fast . When he come to my place with his Samsung Galaxy II he has the same problem of getting connected to internet in his phone . So I don't think our smartphone has any defect or should change anything in its settings but I think the problem is within my computer settings , probably something to be done in Control Panel or even the router problem again . Please solve my problem . Also you can recommend me websites which solve this kind of issues .

  If you are using windows vista or 7 you have to go into the network settings and add your device just as you would have to add a laptop to the network. If a home group has been established you will need to join that home group with your phone.
