What GIS package should I use?

• Can you recommend what GIS – Graphical Information System – software package I should use? The functionality requirement is largely B2B financial – using a GIS package to visualise global variations in a portfolio of products. I have two questions: 1) What low cost ($250-$500) limited functionality but easy to use package would you recommend? I feel as if I’m looking for the Harvard Graphics equivalent in GIS here that I can largely apply myself for 2-6 months in a proof of value approach. 2) What full functionality higher cost package would you use? My understanding is that while ESRI is the industry leader, Mapinfo is a better package for companies without access to significant GIS expertise. Thank you for sharing,

  I haven't used mapinfo, but ESRI for years. They even have online tools now: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline/index.html As far as obtaining expertise, ESRI has user groups throughout the US and the world in pretty much every industry and they can help with a lot of issues, and ESRI has online forums and training for free. http://training.esri.com/gateway/index.cfm I am pretty much self-taught, with only a few official classes.
