How rare are true allergic reactions to mosquito bites?

Allergic Reaction to Mosquito Bites?

  • Just in the past two years I've noticed that I've been having strange reactions to mosquito bites. Instead of just forming a little red itchy bump, I get that along with a giant itchy welt that is usually really warm to touch. They're usually one to three inches in diameter. This has happened on multiple occasions. I've caught the mosquitos while they were still in the process of biting me so I know these are in fact mosquito bites. Does anyone know if it's an allergy or reaction, a certain species of mosquito, or some disease that they are carrying? [And no I don't scratch them.]

  • Answer:

If you are very sensitive to an insect bite, you may experience anaphylaxis. This is when your immune system reacts badly to the insect bite. However, anaphylaxis after an insect bite is rare. You are more likely to have an allergic reaction if you are stung by an insect.Allergic reactions may include mild nausea and intestinal cramps, diarrhea, or swelling larger than 4 inches (about 10 centimeters) in diameter at the site, bigger than the size of a baseball.

Its just an allergic reaction, a lot of people are allergic to mosquito bites. Benadryl is the best allergy medication for this, is brings the swelling down and stops the itching. Its not a disease, don't worry. It's pretty common.
