Which fixie has the lighter frame?

Help: Fixie Frame - Which One?

  • Hi, I'm going to build my first fixed gear this summer. I have a budget in mind and I am willing to spend a fair bit, but I was wondering where is the best place to look for frames. There are an overwhelming amount of frames on ebay etc. but the majority seem to be mass produced in Taiwan - I was wondering, does anyone know what the quality is like on these kinds of frames? If they're pretty terrible, where should I go looking? I've looked at all the 'big' brands and they're quite a lot, so i was wondering if there is a 'half-way house' frame company - that is, one that does not charge huge amounts but nevertheless aren't mass produced in Asia. Thanks for the help http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280826230597?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1952.l2649#ht_7944wt_1704

  • Answer:

I got news for you. Most frames are mass produced in places like China & Taiwan. Walk into a bicycle shop & try to find one with a frame not made in China & Taiwan. Building your own bike is a waste of money anyway. You can go buy one already assembled at one-third the cost.

i wouldn;t get a fixie too limited, slow i wouldn;t "build" my own bike too expensive unless you have a good reason to spend 5x the money for same bike if you want to learn how they work, buy a new bike and take it apart i wouldn;t worry about chinese frames they are all made in china now wle

You would get a much better bike for your money by buying a complete bike. It will cost you 3 times more buying parts and tools.

Unless you are interested on a "one of a kind" frame with the tubes cut specifically for you, you will buy a mass producced frame build in China or Taywan. Taywan being just a bit better than China. Howver, the quality of the frame doesn't depend so much where is made but on the expecifications of the engeneer or designer making the order. For instance: If the bike will be a $100 bike sold at department stores and toy stores by the million, the engineer will especify a frame that will be sold by the manufacturer for maybe $5 painted. If the frame will be a Trek Madone that will sell for $4,000 and only a handfull of them will be sold in the entire world, the engineer will especify much better quality of materials, closer tolerances (+-0.005mm?), more demanding quality control, and the unpainted frame frame may leave the factory unpainted at $200. The painting in smaller buches at a place that especialized on graphics could add another $20 a piece.
