Medical Coding and Billing Salary: The US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics includes medical coders and billers in a group called Medical Records and Health Information Technicians. According to their 2012-13 Occupational Handbook, “The median annual wage of medical records and health information technicians was $32,350 in May 2010. The lowest 10% earned less than $21,240, and the top 10% earned more than $53,430.” The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) performs an annual Medical Coder Salary Survey. According to their 2011 salary survey, the average wage in 2011 for a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) was approximately $46,800. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), another large medical coding association, also conducted a salary survey. According to their most recent survey results, the overall average annual salary of survey respondents was $57,370 in 2008. Medical Administrative Assistant Salary: The U.S. Department of Labor report states that the middle 50% of medical administrative assistants nationwide earn between $25,660 and $37,660 annually. Another thing to consider is the job outlook. The US Department of Labor estimates the employment of medical coders and billers to grow 21% through 2020 which is much faster than the average. The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that the demand for medical administrative assistants will grow by 41% which is much faster than the average. The healthcare industry is a very stable industry. This is because people will always need to see doctors. Demand will continue to be stimulated by a growing and aging population, longer life spans, and new treatments and procedures. Both seem really strong so it depends on what you think you would like best!
