I want to be an Anesthesiologist.

I want to be an Anesthesiologist?

  • I'm an American citizen and I live in the US currently. I already have my bachelors degree in tourism studies from Egypt but I want a change and I am really interested in Anesthesiology. I'm very, very good in math, so I don't think I would have a problem there. I'm also bi-lingual, I speak English and Arabic fluently with 16 different dialects. I know I have to go speak with someone at the University close to me, but before I go I just wanted some feedback if possible about this field. My brother is currently an Anesthesiologist in Jordan, but their requirements are totally different than what is required here in the United States. I really want to do this, Any suggestions on a great University in Michigan? Or what I need to do before I go speak with an counselor? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!!

  • Answer:

The requirements are the same for any other doctor, with some additional specialized training added on. You do have a Bachelor's degree, but you will need to take additional classes to meet the entrance requirements for Medical School, including anatomy, physics, and chemistry. Then you have to score well on the MCATs. Then 4 years of Medical school. Then 4-5 years of residency. Then an additional 3 years or so of fellowship in anesthesiology.

The requirements in the US are: For med school: one to two years of Biology, including labs one year of Physics, including labs one year of English two years of Chemistry, including one year of Organic Chemistry, and labs one year of Calculus You may also want to take cell biology, biochemistry and genetics. After you've completed the science courses, you'll need to take the MCAT: https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/mcat/ Then comes 4 yrs of medical school. Anesthesia residency is another 4 years. Fellowships for subspecialty training are optional, and are 1-2 years additional, usually just 1. [I don't know why everybody here wants to make our training longer. When you live it, it's plenty long, I can assure you! If you have to take 5 years to do your anesthesia residency, something is wrong.]
