Why is my tax code now br?
-
I used to have a tax code of 753L for part time wages of £3,600 p.annum. Now I have been given a tax code of BR (which is emergency tax) I thought you were allowed to earn up to £7,600 there abouts before tax. I have written to the HMRC in Liverpool and am still awaiting a reply, I wrote to them on 24/4/12, I know this is the wrong code so how long does it take for tax office to issue a refund. I have to say they are not deducting N.I from me, so why tax me, I only work 32 hours per week. THEY HAVE GOT THIS WRONG!!! anybody have answers to this. ONLY REPLY if you are in the UK and know what you are talking about. No abusive answers like I got before, or silly answers please....

Answer:
Is this your only source of income? If you have another job or pension then that is getting your allowance. If this is your only source of iincome then the code is wrong. You should be getting a reply about now if you posted 24 April.

Unless you have underpaid tax in a previous year or have a second source of taxable income, you shouldn't be on BR. Rather than write, it will be quicker to call (although be put on hold for a while) and discuss this with a representative. Their telephone number is 08453000627.

This is what HMRC says: BR code You'll see this on a PAYE Coding Notice for a second or additional job or pension if you pay tax at the basic rate. A BR code means you pay tax at 20 per cent on all of your second or additional earnings or pension income because your tax-free Personal Allowance has already been used up on your main job or pension. For example, you may get £5,000 from a second pension and pay £1,000 in tax (20 per cent of £5,000). Something's wrong somewhere. You've done the right thing taking it up with them.
