How do i know if my tax code is right?

just received my new tax code, and its all new to me. ive got my payslip, and found my tax code on there. what do i have to do? ive tried calling them to make sure everything is fine, but grrrr its an 0845 number, and i was in a queue for ages on my mobile....i swear they dont pick up on purpose, to bump the money they make up...

You should have received a letter from HMRC explaining how they reached your code. If not, write to them (a stamp is cheaper than trying to call!).

Have you received (from HMRC) a "notice of coding"? That should show what your code is based on. Does the notice of coding agree with the code on your payslip? What code is it anyway? Generally there is nothing you need to do - I have no idea why you want to call in. Unless you think the code is wrong just leave it alone.
