What are the new opportunities when you move?

I'm 17 and I want to be a singer. I'd like to move to the USA for better opportunities. What must I require?

  • I am 17 year old and I really want to be a singer. I'm starting singing lessons next saturday to improve my voice as I feel I need to. They say I have a good voice as a beginner so I think it's time to take the next step and attend lessons. I want this so badly that this is the first time in my life that I have been this dedicated to something which I really want. I knnow it's not easy to be a singer but I believe if you're good enough, you'll make it. I come from a very tiny island in Europe and we don't have much opportunities here and that is why I would like to move to the USA where there are a whole lot more opportunites where I can expand my dream. My cousin lives there and I've mentioned to him already that I'd like to move to another country so maybe he can help me. What would I need if I decide to move to the USA and how do I appy for these things such as the green card? What are the requirements? Any help will be appreciate :)

  • Answer:

You have no means of anyone petitioning for your immigration to the US. A cousin does not qualify. Even if you had a sibling who was a US citizen and who earned enough to support you petition for your immigration, it would take 11-12 years before you would get an immigration visa to enter the US. You really don't have any opportunities as a singer in the US at this point. You don't even qualify for a student visa to a music school at this point. You have no professional training, no experience, etc, so you cannot even apply to music school and get a temporary student visa. You need proper training first. You need experience. Start locally. If you are a citizen of an EU country, perhaps you will eventually qualify to compete in something like the Eurovision Song Contest or other regionally or internationally recognized music competition. That would bring you to the attention of music schools, agents, managers, etc. Then you might have a chance at a career. But you are going to have to start locally with proper voice training, and you are already years behind your competition. My voice training started at age 7! Not unusual - some start younger. E.g. Vienna Boys Choir - for those who win their auditions, are admitted, and rehearse, etc - routinely go on world tours, and the Choir (their attorneys, et al) arrange necessary visas, travel, etc. You're already way too old - if you are a boy, of course.

Why not move to London instead? And no, your cousin can't help you. The only way you can use family to help you move to the US is if they're a direct relative (mom, dad, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband, wife). You would either need an American husband, an advanced degree with a company willing to sponsor you, or a whole lotta luck to be discovered as a singing talent in your home country who would then be in demand in the US. And at 17, you probably don't know much about American except what you've seen in the movies anyway.

You need to grow up and let reality hit you in the face. You won't get a green card because you want to be a singer, so don't bother. California is flooded with wanna be singers and actors who are waiting tables and washing dishes, and it has 13 percent unemployment. We certainly don't need to import more of them. There is no visa for that, unless you become famous in your home country first. Mick Jaggar can get a visa, a 17 year old no one heard of won't.

? The US does not offer better opportunities; at least not anymore. Most of us citizens eke out an existence including myself. It has a 15% average unemployment rate and the last thing we need are more people piling into the entertainment business disappointed and struggling to eat. Mainland Europe has by far, more opportunities than the US.

You need to be famous first. You are not going to get a work visa for the US otherwise and your cousin can't help you with this. You can try anywhere in the EU, though. I would think neither London, Berlin nor Paris are cultural backwaters. Also you can these days become famous through youtube, and you can be located anywhere to post there. All you need is a a friend with a videocamera, and an internet cafe. But I suggest you first see for how long you are going to stick with the singing lessons. If you have the tendency not to stick with things, you first should prove to yourself that you can stick with it and work on something consistently. Then take the next step. You will need your US citizen parent, sibling, or spouse to sponsor you for a green card. Or your employer can sponsor you if you go to university and get a PhD in science or engineering.

You don't have a choice to move to USA as there are no visas for what you want to do. Also you have a better chances there. If you canot make it in your own county then you have Zero chance here
