Paper mache with white paper towels?

Can you use paper towels or magazine paper for paper mache? Which is better?

  • I have a ball to paper mache. The circumference is 42 inches. I have NO newspaper unfortunately and my neighbors do not either. I'm babysitting so I can't go anywhere. What I DO have though is a CRAP load of magazines lol and a few rolls of paper towels. Which one would be better to use and how should I use it?? I need to do at least six layers. Six to nine layers. It needs to be as smooth as possible as well. It's going to be a deadmau5 head. Thanks!!

  • Answer:

you can use magazine paper for Paper Mache, you can then add paper towel to a dry layer after if needed, but may thin down to mulch if disturbed while placing on sphere/ globe, the paste soaks into paper, then heavier paper is better to form design and hold, once dry you could brush on paste and lay thins strips of paper towel, look at using other recyclable materials for framework plastic, wire, cardboard, poster board, lighter materials and thinner layers, add some white glue to paste for strength, look for material fabric to cover, or paints, deadmau5 head > paper mache http://miairsoft.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=offtopic&action=display&thread=39610 http://familycrafts.about.com/od/papermache/a/plmaskcraft.htm http://www.robertdarwin.com/?p=3 ..

You can use any kind of paper at all, including paper towels and the blue "shop towels" on a roll that are even thicker (and more clothlike and drapey). The thicker the paper product, the fewer layers will be necessary. Magazine pages could be okay perhaps but they're clay coated so may not absorb the adhesive well. None of those things will be really smooth once dry, but you can add another layer of air-dry clay** or you can sand the dried papier mache, etc. You might want to read more about materials to use for papier mache in my answer here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110120014300AAfGvNG ...and Dan's links here too for more on papier mache: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120318225514AAqIqUM ** http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20111005090711AAFph5t .

Most magazine paper is coated and slick and will not absorb much glue and water to soften and be flexible like newspaper. Maybe you have cheap magazines with uncoated paper. a 42 inch circumference with 6 to 9 layers is going to be over 13 inches in diameter and is going to be an awkward handful and not going to dry during any reasonable babysitting job.
