How Fast Can Pelvic Inflamatory Disease Cause Infertility?
-
Hi, I have a new partner since the last 6 months. Before him I never had anything wrong with my body and had done a full sexual check up which was all clear. But a week after sex with him I had this HUGE abdominal pain and burning when urinating. I was a week in bed, it was that much pain. Then doctors found urine infection and some trash and gave me antibiotics. A month later after sex with him again the same episode happened. So doctors found urine infection again and gave me antibiotics. This time it came back after just a week finishing my course of antibiotics. So I was treated again with more antibiotics and was sent to do an untrasound of ovaries and womb. The result didnt come yet. This weekend the pain was so great that I went to hospital and the doctor told me I might have gotten clammydia. If so I got it 6 months ago. I have strong lower abdominal pain, and abnormal discharge. I am already been treated for both clammidia and pelvic inflamatory disease (despite I still need to wait for the results to confirm if is positive or not) but the doctor told me it can cause infertility. Because it started 6 months ago, and the pain is very strong on my pelvc area and my lower left side, I am very worried it already had caued some demage? How long will a pelvic inflamatory disease take to cause infertility? Please let me know..

Answer:
Prompt and appropriate treatment is the best way to prevent infertility. You are doing that! Up to 10-15% of women with PID may become infertile, and if a woman has multiple episodes of PID, her chances of becoming infertile increase. Please make certain you follow up with your doctors and please, please ,please use condoms EVERYTIME you have sex. :-) Best of luck.

I don't know, but the same thing happened to me. I was getting constant UTIs after every intercourse, then what the doctor mistook for chlamydia but it was actually bacterial vaginosis. It did cause PID for me, which is rare, and some doctors I've seen since think the PID was a misdiagnosis but I don't really know. Anyway, i got treated with a big dose of antibiotics aimed at the chlamydia that I didn't have, but I found the bv and utis kept coming back. Now I take Fem Dophilus twice a day and I'm pretty much ok. I also see a medical herbalist who is treating me for the bv and possible pid. Carry on with the investigations, but sometimes you need to exlore alternative routes as well. I think with fertility nowadays it's unlikely that you'll not be able to conceive in the future. Even if there is an issue there, which there might not be, you can usually get round it and go on to have normal pregnancies.
