Talking german in my sleep. is this common?

Burns/Scratches and Sleep-Talking (Repeat Question)?

  • Hi, I'm a Teenage Girl and I have found unusual scratches/burns all over hands and fingers recently. I have a fear of darkness (I know bad for a Teenage Girl) but I keep my light on at night till I fall asleep and my mother will then turn it off when she comes up later at night so I won't know. My mother said when she comes in sometimes she hears me sleep talking, she once asked me 'Can I turn off your light?' because she thought I was awake, I sat up and turned to face her and I said 'It's fluffy' and then dropped back down to my pillow, quite funny if you think of it but my mother has had many experiences with me talking in my sleep before, at sleepovers I also do it. One time I was shouting out in my sleep 'Ow! My eye...' Don't know why, guessing it is my dream. I also have had experiences of sleep-walking, once I was walking across the landing to go to my parents room for a drink but before I got there, I dropped to the floor, about 30minutes later, I woke-up and walked back to my room. (I knew the time because of my alarm) I also found a coat hanger, my brothers mobile phone, a bottle of lemonade and a spoon? under my pillow, don't have a clue how it happened. Here are the pictures of the cuts and burns (they are nothing terrible, promise) http://www.flickr.com/photos/72720081@N06/?saved=1 (copy and paste the link) -- Does anybody have any idea as to why I am waking up with these? And is it normal to sleep talk and walk?

  • Answer:

It seems you are probably very active in your sleep- it might be worth talking to your doctor. Do you have an android or iphone? There's a 'sleep talking' app and it records every unusual noise in the night- it might be interesting for you to try it! There a quite a few sleep disorders- generally they are harmless but if you are concerned your doctor can arrange to do a sleep study on you- it would basically mean staying in a special sleep clinic overnight so they can observe you and take readings of your brain and check that everything is alright. Perhaps it would be a good idea in the mean time to make sure your nails are cut short and filed so you can't scratch yourself and even consider putting a bell on your bedroom door to alert someone if you are leaving- particularly if there are stairs you may fall down. See your doctor! Good luck and take care :)

It is not too unusual. My nephew woke up in a neighbours garden. I can only think you have tried to light a gas or something while asleep. There are a lot of worries in teenage years which may increase sleep walking but my brother grew out of it

No, but see a doctor before you injure yourself. You don't want to wake up in the middle of traffic or anything.

if you have been rummaging through the cutlery draw to get spoons that would explain the cuts, but i can't think of any explanation for the burns. For your safety your parents need to fit a bell to your door so they are aware of when you are walking about. Seems quite extreme you aught to talk the dr really. but in the meantime a bell or even a lock should help keep you safer. If you are getting burns then you are touching something hot and could burn the house down. It's very strange http://www.emedicinehealth.com/sleepwalking/article_em.htm it says all about it on this link, it also says if you are injuring yourself then you should see a dr

It sounds like sleep walking and talking may be normal for you even if it's not for most people! Are you under any extra stress right now with exams or relationships that may be contributing? If so it will die down again when you are more relaxed. Obviously your parents need to be careful you don't do anything silly like wander off out the house. I'd suggest they lock the door than hang the key some distance from it. Sounds a bit odd if you're damaging yourself in some way, usually that isn't done or if it is done accidentally the mind wakes up as a result. I'm wondering if there is any dissociative disorder underlying all this? Like DID or a fugue, depersonalisation or derealisation? Were you abused at any time in your early years or was your mum away or sick and you didn't see her for a while in early life - up to age 4? Maybe consider some counselling to look at why this may be happening.
