How to build dos computer?

  • I started messing around with computers when I was 14 windows 95 was common and there were still 3.1 computers around, now I build and repair computers in my spare time so it's a little embarrassing but I want to build a pure DOS computer for some old games and software frankly the extent of my knowledge on dos is a few basic commands that I needed to diagnose some of the older operating systems. First what hardware can dos handle anything remotely recent? Can I permanently instal it onto a hard drive so i don't have to use floppies just to boot the computer I don't want to have any version of windows on this machine. How large of a hard drive can it handle I'm not sure if i have anything small enough anymore so I may have to buy one. Also is dos in public domain yet or do I have to buy one not that it's very expensive. Also how are drivers handled in dos? I've always worked with windows so I'm a complete novice when it comes to DOS any info or guides on the matter would be appreciated thank you.

Don't bother with a physical build on that man. DOS isn't gonna get rolling on anything more recent than a pentium II Instead, build a virtual machine.
