Visiting Beijing, China, what to buy?

  • Husband and I are visiting China next year to Beijing. I have done some traveling, but we are pretty new at foreign travel. What are some good souvenirs to buy in China? Besides the obvious of key chains and such? We are both history lovers and study other cultures, and would like something that is a traditional product of China. I know in places like England, they are known for bone china and silver, but what is China famous for? And what are good places to shop for them? We won't have much time, so we really need a good idea of what to look for when we arrive. Any tips would help, thanks!

Jade trinkets are nice. However, you must be VERY careful when buying them; like everything else geared to tourism/shopping in China, most are fakes. Indeed, the criminal element is becoming so entrenched, profitable, and powerful that they are driving the legitimate people out of business. One of the few things you can buy cheaply as a souvenir: music CDs. Whether they are pirated copies or not, at least the music is real and enjoyable. Small bands of thieves and pickpockets/purse-snatchers are becoming more common in china's larger cities; guard your belongings carefully! Read all the travel warnings/cautions put out by the US Department of State before you go to China. I recommend that you opt for a trip to Taiwan instead. It's the better of the Two Chinas when it comes to enjoying a pleasant and relaxing vacation. No visa problems either!!
