Volunteering at a hospital?

Questions about volunteering in a hospital when I'm planning on getting accepted to medical school?

  • In two months or so I'm going to college and plan on volunteering at a hospital for at least 4 years so I can become a more competitive applicant for medical school. 1.) Where should I ask my director to tell me where to volunteer at? What part or specific job at the hospital I should do? 2.) In high school I gave my counselor's a proposal to approve of (a proposal is a written paper that tells me where I'm volunteering and why). Then I have a log where I record my hours and the director signs them off and eventually I turn my log to my counselor where they'll put my hours in my record. However, I heard it's not the same in college, tell me what I should do from making my ollege know that I'm volunteering at the hospital to how I record my hours and finally how do I make my colleges confirm my hours.

  • Answer:

Colleges do not keep track of a student's volunteer hours. for medical school you are better off concentrating on getting A's in all classes and getting a couple of internships.

Volunteering is only one aspect of professional development. See link below. Find the pre-health professions advisory office's web site for your university. Read their recommendations. If they do not have recommendations, read those at similar sites at other universities.
