What am i doing wrong in my interview?
-
I'm trying to get a job at a fast-food restaurant. I am 21, go to a good college, and have no experience, although I take along a resume listing my (albeit minimal) volunteer experiences. I often get called for interviews, but do not get called back after the interview. Some things I do in the interview: I dress nice; black jeans and a cardigan and a nice blouse, no strong perfume or anything. I stand up straight, look the interviewer in the eye, smile and shake his hand and say nice to meet you. I make a little small talk before the interview starts, which seems to be well received. I've practiced my answer to many interview questions, although they are very brief answers. I try to deliver them slowly (sometimes I talk too fast) and confidently and act positive and interested in the job. When they throw me a curveball question, I do the best I can with it. I research the company a little beforehand and try to throw in something about how I appreciate how they're committed to quality food or whatever. I listen politely and don't interrupt when they start telling me about the position. Last time they asked me if I had any questions, I asked, "What does a typical day in this position look like?" (probably a stupid question for a fast food restaurant; I got it off snag a job.com). At the end I say it seems like a great job and I'm looking forward to hearing from them. I even send a follow-up email thanking them for taking the time to interview me and expressing my enthusiasm about the position. So what am I doing wrong? Things I can think on to improve: Maybe I should work on talking longer than 10 or so seconds, I just get nervous to talk longer. Maybe I should ask a better question at the end, or say some stuff while they're explaining the job to me rather than staying quiet the whole time. Please let me know what you think. I'm getting really frustrated, and my parents are not at all taking the job search seriously and just think interviews for fast food places are a joke. I'm also not at all confident in my people skills. Also here's a sample answer I might give: Why do you want to work here? Well, I I feel like (place here) would be a really good place to work for; I enjoy your food a lot and I know (place) is committed to using healthy and fresh ingredients. I also think I would enjoy working in a fast-paced environment like (place) and I think my attention to detail and work ethic would fit in well here.

Answer:
Stay confident. Its hard to get a job now a days. Try responding to their question like its natural, and not practiced. Also, dont make your answers to cheesey. Good luck!

Hard to say without interviewing you. It is possible that you may be considered to be overqualified, and the interviewer might feel that you won't stay there very long. That happened to me in about 1975. I interviewed at a phone company and I tested so high that they sent me for a special interview in the head office. The head office said, " I don't know why they sent you here, we don't have any openings." I was out of work for over six months that time.
