What is mean by refresh rate? What is the role of refresh rate in games?

Hi, I want to know about the role of refresh rate in games. I have a gaming pc and I play highly graphical games like Black Ops, GTA IV, BF3, Modern Warfare 3 etc. In the graphics options of these games, there is an option of refresh rate 60Hz, 70Hz, 85Hz etc. My question is that what is the role of refresh rate in games? And also explain me in detail that Which value of refresh rate should have for playing smooth games? I have 27" LED and my graphics card is GTX 560 Ti. Thanks!

Refresh rate deals with the monitor, you want to have the games refresh rate set as close to the monitor's as possible so that you get the best performance from the game. Proper refresh rate will give you the best frame rate and smoothest animation. Its impossible to tell you what the refresh rate is based on "27" LED" due to the fact that different brands and costs will determine what refresh rate the monitor is.
