Am I going to be Fired?

Should I allow myself to be fired or quit? (I KNOW I'm going to be fired)?

  • I work as a host at a restaurant where all the employees are required to do side work. The manager creates a list twice a month and every employee is assigned to their side work, which is due after a few weeks. According to the general manager, if you don't do your side work, *you will get fired*. I spaced off earlier this week and didn't meet the deadline (Tuesday May 15) for my side work (I was supposed to deep-clean two tables). I didn't even realize until today (Saturday May 19) that I had forgotten. Today I was informed by a manager that the general manager of the restaurant wants to talk to me. She has tried to call me a few times this week, but my phone battery went permanently dead earlier and I've spent most of this week waiting for a new one to arrive by mail. The general manager wasn't working tonight so I'm going to go in on Monday, when she is working, to talk to her. Also, I checked my work schedule for next week and I'm not on it at all. I also checked the new side work list and I'm not on that either. I'm pretty certain the general manager has made up her mind to fire me. So the question is, should I let myself be fired or should I quit before she officially tells me? My thinking is, is that it will be harder to get a new job if I have to say I was fired from this job, as opposed to just saying I quit it. I am 17, so I probably couldn't apply for unemployment anyways, and I have enough money to last 4 or 5 months. Also, is it a possibility to go in on Monday and see if she fires me, and if she does just announce "I quit", or would that not work if she's already said she's letting me go? If I am fired, I want to stand a chance of getting a new job, and I don't think I'll even be considered for one if the record says I've been fired.

  • Answer:

if you quit under threat of being fired its the same as being fired. People will ask why did you quit your last job and you will say "i was going to be fired". How long have you worked there? Knowing what I know now if I was 17 and in your position I would do one of two things 1. Call in Monday morning and say "I'm turning in my notice that I am quitting. Yesterday was my last day" 2. Go talk to the GM and apologize for not doing the side work

Why don't you man up and ask what you can do to keep your job.

You should quit before getting fired because like you said, it's hard finding a new job if you've been fired. You can try lying and saying something like that one of your parents got sick and so you've been having to care for him or her and that with all the stress and chaos the side job slipped your mind. That you hope she understands but that if not you would like to quit before getting fired because you take pride in your work and don't want a bad record just because of this family emergency. Basically, you could give her a guilt trip in order to get your job back or at least quit but with pride.

Lol make a big scene and if she tries to fire you, quit. You can tell interviewers that you didn't get a long with the boss you had because of her personality or something.
