What is the best study guide for the Pharmacy technician test?

Is it harder to find a pharmacy technician job if you only passed the certification?

  • I'm thinking of studying and then taking the test to be certified, and I don't want to take a semester course at a community college to prepare for it. Will that be almost an automatic no when it comes to getting hired, or will it still be ok? I have a college degree, useless as it is, so it's not like I have no higher education, it's just not pharmacy tech focused....and I really don't want to go back for a semester if I can just study and take the test and become certified in that way. thanks for any advice

    The answer to your question is yes, formal training will be stronger on your resume than just your PTCB or ExCPT certification. Although, if you live in a state that requires very little to become a pharmacy technician, than your certification might be enough. So first make sure you know what your state requires. Depends on your state requirements. Some states require you to go through training before you can be hired or possibly even go through certain schools. So you will need to check your state requirements. If training is not required in your state, then I don't think that employers will automatically say no to you because you didn't go through training. One thing I always tell people to keep in mind is that if there are 2 applicants who are the same in every way but one had training and one didn't- which would you choose? Probably the one who got training. I suppose you could always apply for jobs after you get your certification and then if you can't get hired, do the training however the training will really help you prepare for the certification exam so it may be a good idea to do it first. Most training is online so you won't have to necessarily go to a full semester of college. Training can cost from $500 to $5,000 and take as little as 3 months to complete- all depends on the school you go to. Another thing to look at is the help wanted ads in your area. What are employers asking for? Do they specifically want trained pharmacy technicians? If so, then you better get some training. If not, then you are probably ok! Good luck! Hope this helped!
